Windsor Women's March 2018
On Saturday, January 20th, 2018 over two hundred people gathered at Windsor City Hall to participate in the local Women's March, part of a global movement that began one year ago. The original Women's March on Washington was a response to the inauguration of Donald Trump and featured delegations from across The U.S. and Canada - including fifty-six people from Windsor.
This year saw thirty-eight marches across Canada, events which were mirrored in countries around the world, including Italy, Japan, and the U.K.
Rather than focusing on American politics, the 2018 rally broadened it's perspective to include the galvanizing #MeToo movement and a call for women to become more involved in their respective governments, whether through voting or running for an elected position. There were also representatives from trans rights and ally groups as well as local unions and student associations.
The march was preceded by a speech from Pat Papadeas, musical performance from Donald McArthur and The Violet Sunshine Band, and the reading of a Maya Angelou poem by Leslie McCurdy.
Prior to the march local podcast Rose City Politics ran a special all-women episode on Wednesday evening that explored the themes of the 2018 march from multiple perspectives.
